The passenger next to me was on a phone call while the plane was still boarding. A perfect moment to enjoy the chocolate-covered cranberries I bought at Vienna Airport. When he noticed the package, he made a clear gesture with his hands—almost demanding that I share some.
To me, moments like these are a lot of fun. I love it when people live on the edge of what is socially accepted. So I smiled and thought, Yep, I have abundance—I’ll give him a double portion.
A Snack Opens a Door
Right before takeoff, he finished his phone call and turned to me. He said, “I thought you might be kind and willing to give me some of those snacks. I also realize most people would be offended by that demanding hand signal. I think this is ^#@$!%* awesome.”
I laughed and said, “Dobro chuť,” which means “enjoy your food” in Slovak, since I noticed he was from Slovakia.
Then he asked what I do for a living. I told him right away that I’m an evangelist.
Divine Timing in Conversation
He had no idea what an evangelist does. I shared a few testimonies of what God has done in my life and then explained the simple gospel.
He said, “Sir, I had a religious upbringing—actually, a pretty strict one. I’ve come to the point where I don’t want to believe in God anymore, though I am scared that because of that I will spend eternity in hell.”
My sense was that he had experienced religion rather than a Spirit-filled family life. That led me to share about free will and the fact that God desires a relationship with us.
Seize the Moment
Clearly, the Holy Spirit was at work. During our conversation, God broke down some strongholds. Eventually, he thanked me for taking the time to answer his questions.
Isn’t that wonderful? I could have been offended by his snack request, but instead I could already sense the Holy Spirit in the moment. This was clearly a divine encounter arranged by God.
I know God is preparing the ground so that somebody else will be able to follow up this conversation. Isn’t it exciting how God works?
